What to Expect

Having studied at College Lasalle and later the local Richard Robinson Academy of Fashion Design, Elise Bourque, long influenced by street wear and related-blogs, was sufficiently prepared start creating her own fashion designs. The Petit-Rocher, New Brunswick native runs a notable blog to showcase her designs and chronicle her life as a growing designer.

The Fall/Winter 2012 Collection from Elizbourk combines street style, neutral tones and girly fashions with a “boyish” twist. Inspired, in part, by blog fashion, bright and bold colours will round off an assemblage that Bourque says she put her “heart and soul” in to.

Ottawa Tastemakers Series – Kate Reeve & Fashion for Funds

When it comes to positively impacting others, adolescence has proven to be no barrier to success for 13-year-old Kate Reeve who, for the second year in a row, is coordinating Fashion for Funds, a unique fundraiser for Ottawa’s Roger’s House. Last year, the event raised upwards of $8,000 that went directly to helping the children at the CHEO-affiliated palliative care centre. Ottawa Fashion Week sat down with Kate to gauge her ambitions for this year’s production, and we quickly learned that her level of passion for people is off the charts. Below is an edited version of our interview with her.

Ottawa Fashion Week (OFW): Tell us what Fashion for Funds is all about.
Kate Reeve (KR): It’s a charity fashion show that raises money for Roger’s House, which is a children’s hospice on the grounds of CHEO. 100% of the money raised will go directly to helping these children who are dealing with life limiting illnesses.

OFW: Why did you choose a fashion show as a fundraiser?
KR: I thought a fashion show would be a really fun way to bring the community together and something new for me to try out.

OFW: You raised a significant amount of money for Roger’s House last year; what are your fundraising goals for this year?
KR: Last year, our goal was to raise $5000, and we ended up raising over $8,000. So, this year I’m hoping we’re able to hit the $10,000 mark.

NYE style in one word Zigazig-ha. After all these years I still have no idea what it means yet I still really really really want one of those things.

Go-to party accessories Whatever makes you feel like you can dance all night.

Where will you be celebrating? Somewhere in Vancouver, BC. As long as you got a good crowd it doesn’t matter what you end up doing, in my opinion.

Cocktail of choice I’m prompted to say Champagne since my blog is called Pop Champagne…but after a few it all tastes great, even the cheapest beer.

New Year’s resolution Last year I had no resolution and it turned out to be an amazing year of surprises. So this year, I’m still just going to wing it, and be thankful of what comes my way.

NYE style in one word Sparkly

Go-to party accessories I’m not a huge fan of accessories – I believe that less is definitely more, but on occasions like NYE accessories are definitely needed.  I love sparkly rings and earrings – the bigger the better. I also love love love scarves and think that every outfit looks better with one – even on New Year’s Eve.  False eyelashes are also a girl’s best friend to help create a dynamic special occasion look along with a fabulous pair of shoes. If you have false eyelashes and great shoes it doesn’t matter what the rest of the outfit looks like. On NYE no matter where you celebrate I think that every outfit looks better with a bit of sparkle.   It can be your makeup, your nails, your shoes or your entire outfit, but something should definitely sparkle.

Where will you be celebrating This New Year’s I’ll be at my friend’s house ringing in the New Year with all of my closest friends.

Cocktail of choice Vodka, X-Rated fusion liqueur, cranberry juice and a splash of grapefruit juice over ice.  Delicious and pretty.

New Year’s resolution As much as I’d like to say I don’t make resolutions, of course I do.  There’s the typical lose weight, eat healthier and get more sleep resolutions, but I also want to learn to make more out of my time.  I want to write more, grow my little blog into something bigger, spend more quality time with my kids, get outside more, and travel more.

…the eye of the beholder.

Hailee Steinfeld, Lindsey Wixson, Elle Fanning

A frequent purveyor of fashion magazines, it never donned on me before. The focus for me was, of course, the clothes. But the more and more fashion editorials you thumb through, the better you are at identifying the models and clothes featured. So while looking over the pages of British Vogue, I remembered the model used in one of its editorials, Lindsay Wixson. “I remember her!” I said to myself, “she’s on the cover of style.com/print and wasn’t she the face of Prada at one point?”. Naturally, I looked up her credentials and was in sheer shock and awe when I learned of her age. 16. Yes, that’s right 16 years of age. The Prada print ads I was referring to, I saw last year. I remember my boyfriend had caught a glimpse and asked me if the model was a little girl. She might as well have been.

The aforementioned anecdote bears the question; why are children modelling clothes made for today’s woman? What do I mean by “today’s woman”? In the interest of this post, she is affluent, over 30 years of age, has a thriving career and gracefully balances her work and family life. She is not 16 years of age. Or 13 for that matter (yes I’m talking about Elle Fanning). Granted, Marc by Marc Jacobs is targeted to a younger generation, but not 13 years young! Doesn’t it just get your knickers in a knot? The world was up on arms, earlier this year, when French Vogue released a full-length editorial featuring a make-up donning, provocatively posed 10-year-old girl. The reasons behind the editorial? To make a statement against the fashion world’s beauty idealism? Perhaps.

It’s been famously written that “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Indeed it is. Regrettably, many look to society to shape their ideals of what beauty is (read: should be) – expectations become unfulfilled, travesty ensues, inno is lost. I would hope that in 2011, today’s woman has a healthy take on what beauty is or should be. I hope the same for their younger counterparts: today’s woman of the future.

Adrian Wu’s Holiday Collection

The crowd clustered in the maze of chairs placed near the entrance to the Signatures Show Ottawa, a large urban shopping event in the Ottawa Convention Centre, to see Adrian Wu‘s holiday collection this past Tuesday. Wu could be seen occasionally popping out from back stage to check on the crowd. After Wu’s cue, the show began to a melodic voice and a piano. The models confidently walked the maze-like runway in 10″ heels, that may be an exaggeration…but not really, their heads adorned with contorted Styrofoam tubes. The dresses were adorned with peplum waistlines and ruffled hemlines and down to there lengths; subtly reminiscent of Jil Sander Spring 2012. The colours were cool metallic, if not rich, and blocked. This writer’s favourite? Not that you asked, but an asymmetrical floor length in silver with white panels on the bodice. A cool choice for any holiday party. Wu’s holiday collection only contained 10 pieces, but was concise and to the point. And that’s the way it should be.

Metro News has made an album of all pictures taken in front of their green screen and as well as a collection of pictures taken during the event. DeMoyo

DeMoyo brought a clean collection of simple designs with a tasteful balance of refinement and practicality. While the overall designs were simple, DeMoyo added a great touch with the subtle use of ruffles and structure in some of the dresses. While many of these dresses would be best suited for a company event or cocktail party, I could definitely see me in some of the more casual outfits for days spent strolling downtown. The colour scheme was mainly white and grey, though we witnessed some pops of cobalt and kelly green in the collection.
