Edit by Jeanne Beker

The woman who has taught us everything we know about fashion showcased her very own collection last night. As a world-renowned fashion journalist and host of CTV’s Fashion Television, Jeanne Beker has interviewed many talented artists and has covered countless fashion shows throughout her career.

OFW was pleased to have her show her collection this season. The collection reflects Jeanne’s personal style and appeals to any woman who wants to be stylish, professional, and comfortable too.

The show opened with Jeanne’s co-designer, Linda, who gave a speech thanking the guests for attending and told the audience that Jeanne is humbled for them to be seeing her collection on the runway.

Each outfit was a complete day look suitable for work but with potential to dress it up for the evening as well. This is the big appeal to Jeanne’s collection: it’s designed for real women to help them take the legwork out of dressing for work and dressing for the evening by putting it all into one. Flowy fabrics and flattering shapes mixed with different textures really attracted the audience’s attention.

Special guests Lianne Lang, Nicole Holness, Caroline Waldo,  Jessica Bowden and singer Samantha Chang closed the show with a spectacular performance. After the show, the four ladies live-modeled their outfits for our silent auction which benefitted a charity closed to Jeanne’s heart- Dress for Success, a not-for-profit organization that provides tools for career development to economically-disadvantaged women.

David McCaffrey

David McCaffrey's collection was the penultimate show of fashion week, and made every girl in the room wish that she was getting married every day! With ruching throughout bodices and skirts, long lines of buttons bringing together the dresses, and black feathers speckling his creations, McCaffrey’s creations were elegant and fashion-forward. While white and black were central colours, powder blue and chocolate brown also made appearance in luxurious fabrics, which included sheers, silks and lace. These one-of-a-kind dresses turned heads, and really captured the spirit of the week—sophisticated chic with a grown-up appeal. For more photos of the collection visit our Facebook page.

Symbiose by Hinda A.

Hinda A. debuted her collection, Symbiose, during the final day of Ottawa Fashion Week. The Montréal-based designer’s Spring/Summer collection possessed a somewhat Safari vibe  — from the deep olive green, royal blue and neutral tones which included wide-legged pants, graphic prints and linen fabrics. A swirl of metallics, sequins and ash grey jersey knit with a sea of ruffles also made their way down the runway. The final look: gauze-like tent dress adorned in large white paillettes — coolly strutting down the runway the model floated like a cloud. The crowd as certainly pleased as Symbiose riled up a standing ovation. Visit our Facebook page for more photos of the Symbiose by Hinda A. Spring/Summer 2012 collection.

DeMoyo

DeMoyo brought a clean collection of simple designs with a tasteful balance of refinement and practicality. While the overall designs were simple, DeMoyo added a great touch with the subtle use of ruffles and structure in some of the dresses. While many of these dresses would be best suited for a company event or cocktail party, I could definitely see me in some of the more casual outfits for days spent strolling downtown. The colour scheme was mainly white and grey, though we witnessed some pops of cobalt and kelly green in the collection.

Emilia Torabi & Jana Hanzel

Ottawa’s dynamic duo was at it once again with this African inspired collection. These stunning designs featured a variety of cuts, colours, and patterns- all with an exotic tribal feel. Individual dresses combined shapes with the use of straight cuts, subtle ruffles, and structured collars. What was particularly great about this collection was that each piece was unique. Though similar in inspiration, the styles were not repeated. Each dress kept the audience guessing how it would be structured, what pattern it would include, and in what colour. To accompany each dress was a stunning hat from Chapeaux de Madeline. Like the dresses, these hats came in a variety of shapes and colours- all equally creative and captivating. Ornamented with bows, ruffles, sequins, and feathers, these oversized hats perfectly complemented each outfit with their elegant touch.

Ralph Leroy

Haitian native from Montréal, Ralph Leroy, opened his show with the musical styling’s of the band, Mackenzie First including Dave Black and Domenic Berardi. Shortly after the live performance, Sophie Latreill from Fire Weavers appeared on the stage with flaming metal frames, heating up the OFW stage. Keeping with the theme of fire, the runway room filled with smoke as the first model appeared. Fiery red and flashy gold tones keep with the theme as the models strut their stuff. Donning ‘bride of Frankenstein’ hair-do’s, the models wore flowy designs in warm tones, setting the scene for a killer trend of S/S 2012. Modeling for Ralph last night was one of our own, Erica Wark, who walked the runway in a metallic gold dress that lit up the stage. Finally, adding a sense of the wild to his collection, Ralph showcased a white feather dress with black polka dots and a long train. It seems that feathers will be a must-have item in our wardrobes for spring!

Travis Taddeo

Montréal-based Travis Taddeo closed Day 2 of Ottawa Fashion Week with his self-titled line. Canadian model phenom, Herieth Paul opened the show in a blush pink, with metallic threading, midi-length, sleeveless dress. From therein, models walked the runway in loose, sheer cotton, bleached denim, supple leathers and feathers. Feathers adorned vests, skirts and the final look: feather dress with matching feather cape. For almost every woman’s design, the male counterpart was close to follow. A desert-themed collection with a focus on protection from desert elements. Striped cotton/linen hooded cloaks and blush long-sleeved and billowing blouses supported such a theme. The final walk, with Taddeo in front, stirred a standing ovation in which this writer participated.
